Another poem for you guys! This one was inspired by a trip to a capital city. You can read my previous poems here and here.
I have seen hell, and it’s homeless people lining the streets while Ralph Lauren and Hugo Boss and Cartier look on - and people walk past with airpods in, glued to their phones. It’s a melting pot of sights, sounds and smells, all much worse and more overstimulating than the last. I hide in a bookshop but I’m overwhelmed, all the titles screaming ‘BUY ME!!!’ and the scent of cologne and perfume.
I have seen overconsumption at its finest and it sickens me - all white tops and black dresses and embellished handbags... How do people have this much money to waste? piles and piles of it, all piled up in the forgotten corner of a charity shop. I have seen the problems of today’s world and they're all here, within a two-minute walk of the city centre. The enormity of it all paralyzes me until I realised it's not of my making, therefore it's not mine to fix. The concrete jungle and its social dilemmas are of its own making - the addictions (the shopping, the drugs, all of it); they've made their beds, now they must lie in it, but of course they choose to look the other way. Stick your airpods in, eyes down, suck your tummy in - You're doing a great job, working hard to sink more money into overconsumerism. I wonder, when will it all stop?
Let me know what you thought of today’s poem. I appreciate your feedback and as always, I look forward to seeing you in the comments! Til next time, J x
