Something I have realized on my digital minimalism journey so far is that realism is important. We hear so much about balance and creating a philosophy of technology, but more so than that I think it’s important to be realistic. We can’t all escape to a cabin in the woods, and we wouldn’t all want to even if we could. Life in the 21st Century necessitates technology, but we can still be intentional with our usage and limit our screen time to no more than what is truly useful or helpful.

It’s all very well to want to downgrade to a dumbphone and swap your MacBook for an desktop computer, but will those help you in the long run? Life isn’t just about digital minimalism—there’s other stuff you want to be and do in your life, and some screens and technology might help you do that. We don’t want to ‘throw the baby out with the bathwater’—some screens might be useful to you in your pursuit of your goals. There’s no point eschewing tech completely if it helps you to live a better life, and at the same time we shouldn’t be spending 8+ hours a day on screens.
